What it actually is

Hydrogen water is regular water infused with dissolved molecular hydrogen (H2) gas, either via tablets, a countertop generator, or a portable electrolysis bottle. The proposed mechanism is that H2 acts as a selective antioxidant. It neutralizes specific reactive oxygen species without disrupting normal cellular signaling the way some broader antioxidants might. That's a real, published biochemistry hypothesis, backed by lab work.

The gap is between a plausible mechanism and a proven human benefit. Those are different claims, and the marketing on most hydrogen water hardware collapses them into one.

What the human trial data actually shows

The human trial base is small. A handful of studies, mostly under 40 participants, look at exercise recovery markers (blood lactate, subjective fatigue), oxidative stress markers, or metabolic syndrome indicators. Some report modestly favorable results on secondary markers. Several show no real difference from plain water on the outcomes that matter most, like actual performance or long-term health markers.

None of the existing trials are large enough or long enough to settle the question either way. Call this evidence category 'promising but unproven.' It's neither debunked nor confirmed, and that middle ground is worth sitting with rather than resolving prematurely in either direction.

What's driving the current popularity

Home hydrogen water hardware has gotten cheaper and more consumer-friendly over the past few years, which is a hardware story more than a new-evidence story, the science hasn't meaningfully advanced as fast as the product category has. Wellness and biohacking communities have amplified the antioxidant framing, often citing the mechanism research (real) as if it were outcome research (much thinner).

Is it worth trying, and is it risky

Drinking hydrogen-infused water carries essentially no known downside beyond cost, it's still just water. If the price of the hardware doesn't bother you and you're curious, there's no safety reason to avoid it. But if the purchase decision is riding on a specific promised benefit, recovery, anti-aging, detox, the trial evidence to date doesn't support treating those as established outcomes.
